Snowmen pancakes with bacon scarves – Quirky doesn’t mean time consuming
Back when I was regularly making quirky food art, people would often ask me “how do you have time for that??”
I would love to say that I spent hours and hours on some of these projects, but realistically, most of them were thrown together at the last minute. Or… even when I was pre-planning and knew I wanted to do something quirky, the end result was still only going to take a couple extra minutes to make.
For example, the snowman pancake above…. Without the quirky factor, I would’ve still been making bacon and pancakes, so the amount of time it takes to make those remain the same regardless.
The only real difference is that instead of making a single pancake in a pan or on a griddle, I put two small ones right next to each other (one slightly bigger than the other, of course). Instead of putting the bacon on the side of the plate, I laid it carefully on top to create a snowman scarf.
And do you know how long it took me to dig out chocolate chips and M&M’s from the cabinet to create the eyes, noses, and buttons? Probably 30 seconds…maybe a full minute if the box where I keep all those goodies got pushed to the back and required I climb on a cabinet to reach them. Whoop-de-do.
I made several different snowmen that day because there were multiple people needing fed, but even so, that means with an assembly-line production, I maybe added an extra five minutes to how long it took for breakfast. Nobody starved in that amount of time and my daily schedule wasn’t drastically thrown off that day. That amount of time was less than it takes to find the missing shoe for any given morning, so if it means spending those few minutes to make everyone giggle when they get their plates… I’m good with that.

- They’re completely edible! Sometimes we have to resort to using non-food items to make the quirky theme come together, but it’s more magical when it’s all food.
- It’s savory! I’ve said it before, but cakes and cookies are easily to play with and turn them into creative creations. People don’t do it nearly as much with dinner items.
- It’s versatile! River from Wing It Vegan did what I end up doing often times; she experimented with other toppings that might make the look better. You’ll have to hit her up to see the ones with peas and black eyed peas.
- It’s easy! No fancy skills or tools needed here. It’s no more complicated than building a real snowman, but a whole lot warmer. :)
- It’s vegan! While I’m not personally vegan and have no interest in being such, I hate when I see vegans being completely boring by their own set restrictions. Who says you can’t still have some fun with the food?
Top 15 Edible Snowmen
Tuesday’s post about snowman earmuffs got me to thinking about other snowmen you can eat. We’re smack dab in the middle of winter, but beyond the Christmas Santas and Rudolphs, so how about some snowy-looking treats instead?
1. Snowman Cookie Pops – I prefer them with the M&M nose at the end, I think, but the other candies were a good attempt at carrots.
2. Snowman Gum – I originally posted about this as a stocking stuffer. I still think it’s cute for that, but you could potentially put it in a gift basket at other parts of the year, too.
3. Doughnut Snowmen on a Stick – This one actually has a real carrot nose, but I’m not sure anyone is going to want to eat that in combination with doughnuts and candies. I do love the coal eyes and mouth, though. They’re made out of grape Nerds, so they aren’t all uniform in shape.
4. Oreo Cookie Snowmen – Aww. The middle one has earmuffs. I believe those are mini M&Ms instead of full sized ones, too, because otherwise they would be too big on Oreos.
5. Snowman Pancakes – Man, snowmen and M&Ms go hand in hand, huh? At least we have some candy corn going on for a nose for this one.
6 & 7. Marshmallow Snowmen and Cupcakes with Earmuffs – At first I figured the cupcakes would be made with coconut, but nope! Those are white sugar sprinkles. I would totally eat those now that I know that, hehe.
