World’s largest monster sushi – 13 pounds? Pass the chopsticks!
Nablopomo – A place you want to go – This restaurant – Umewaka Restaurant in Anjo City, Japan
I don’t think this would be the best tasting sushi ever, but I do think it’d be quite the sight to watch this happen in person. (At least skip through some of the video to get a better idea of just how big this is).
They lay it out on a piece of seaweed that is 2 meters long and the total product weighs in at about 6kg (13 pounds) and 25 cm across (10 in). Obviously it’s not cheap either, at ¥15,000 or about 200 bucks….but wouldn’t it make for an awesome party spread?
From what I can find, they also offer up a large platter of sushi nigiri, too, with things like octopus and squid, where the chunk of tuna alone is enough to make 40 normal portions of nigiri.
Unfortunately, no pictures there, so who knows? Nevermind, found some! There’s a “normal sized” platter shown at the bottom for comparison’s sake. Holy cow, they’re huge!
Hawaiian haystacks – Pile it on and enjoy
The girls always love when I make haystacks, or rather, they get to make them, because the ingredients are rarely the same twice, and they each get to customize their “chicken sundae.”
Hawaiian haystacks aren’t even from Hawaii, by the way. It’s just that pineapple is a common ingredient and that’s connected to the Hawaii name.
Anyway, if you’ve never made them before, you should. Haystacks are a great way to finish off a bunch of ingredients that you only have a handful of, and if you have picky eaters, no problem…..only add the items each person wants.
Hawaiian Haystacks Recipe:
- Rice
- Chicken, chunked or shredded (leftover chicken works great)
- Chicken sauce/gravy (recipes below)
- Any number of diced/sliced/chopped ingredients including pineapple, olives, green onions, green peppers, chow mein noodles, mandarin oranges, cheese, avocado
Pile on in order and enjoy. Yep, it’s that simple.
Chicken Sauce Recipe Ideas:
(The links are to recipes that don’t use canned condensed soup, if you’re like me and try to avoid it….but the canned soup version is tasty and fine if you’re okay using it)
- 1 cup chicken, 1 can cream of chicken soup, 1 cup water, salt and pepper (you could also add sour cream, cream cheese, chicken broth, or milk in addition to or in place of various ingredients….really, it’s not an exact science….work with what you have)
- Mel’s Kitchen Café
- Real Mom Kitchen
- Your Sacred Calling (this one uses coconut milk
Here’s some of the ingredients from another time I made them:
So colorful. The second item on the top row is chopped almonds, by the way….they give a nice crunch.

Glico curry mix – Curry should not smell like ramen and look like fake meat ice cubes
Being from a place where curry isn’t a daily dish or even a yearly dish, having prepackaged curry sauces was rather foreign for me.
I thought when I opened it, there would be an overwhelming smell of curry spice. After all, it’s curry, right?
(Yes, the fork fell all the way in, oops)
Instead, it smelled like cheap chicken ramen noodle seasoning packets. *gasp!* I was not expecting that.
(I really need to remember not to take pictures under the stove overhead light.)
Nor was I expecting to watch it broken into blocks that waivered back and forth between looking like fake meat and funky colored ice cubes. Weird.
Fortunately, a half hour later, it was completely transformed, both in appearance and taste/texture.
See that? Absolutely delicious. Full of rich, spicy, curry flavor, and not even a faint whiff of ramen noodle smell. The best part was that there was no need to adjust the seasoning or deal with finicky thickeners to pull it together. If you have access to Glico curry mix, give it a go!
