Quirky bunny chocolate chip cookies – Why it’s awesome my sister knows about QC


I really, really wasn’t sure about telling my family about blogging. It’s not that I’ve ever posted anything awful or that I would regret, of course.
In fact, my “about me” section on QJ has always included a line about how if I wouldn’t want my mother seeing it, I wouldn’t post it….even though she didn’t know about either site until recently. It’s just a little different when people you actually know are reading what you write.
But then there’s things like the entire BlogHer experience that never would’ve happened had I not told them. And specifically with my sister, there never would’ve been the tons of pictures we took posing with bunnies (or as bunnies, ha).

And more importantly, she wouldn’t have made Quirky bunny cookies and sent me the pictures. Oh yeah, definite perks to them knowing, hehe.

When QJ moves – Part 10 – We heart our trash men <3

Part of the reason my move last year is getting so much blog loving is because it was a *big* move. We basically consolidated 3 different homes plus storage, all into one big house. It took weeks of preparation, planning, and packing….and a whole lot of boxes.

So even though we threw away a lot of stuff -before- the move, there was obviously a ton of stuff to be disposed of during and after the move as well.

Which meant our trash men had their work cut out for them the first couple weeks. Now they weren’t obligated to take anything beyond our first trashcan that could be picked up by the truck automatically.

But they did. They were awesome. And so while we were setting up a yard sale one morning and they came through to pick up their weekly mountain of trash, I sent one of the girls to go ask them what kind of cookies they liked. They said sugar, so the next week, I spent the evening making heart and truck-shaped cookies for them.

Now obviously I’m no SugarBelle and I didn’t take the time to learn how to flood and perfect. But a butter knife and ziploc bag of icing did fairly well, and I doubt the trash guys really cared what they looked like….they were just happy to get some cookies, hehe.

And in the process of showing my appreciation for their hard work, I also learned how to make hippo cookies.

Upper left cookie? Definite hippo.

Those were the results of trying to figure out just which cookie cutter lines I should follow in order to get something that resembled a truck. Upper left is a hippo. Or guinea pig even, ha. Bottom left has a bison head. Upper right? I have no idea what that miserable thing is, hehe.

Moral of the story: Make lots of extra cookies so half can go to the receiver and all the mistakes  can be eaten.

Oh, and appreciate your trash people, mail men and women, etc. They may not always do things the way you like it, but when they do, make sure you tell them thanks….or use them as an excuse to make baked goods. :P

Combining Canada Day and 4th of July – Pinwheel swirl cookies (Picture heavy)

An awesome thing about Canada Day and Independence Day being so close together is that the color scheme is so similar that I could logically be lazy *and* resourceful all in one.

So on July 1st, Canada, I mixed up my colors and made half of my cookie lollipops into red and white Canada cookies, and the other half into American red, white, and blue ones. Score!

I have quite a few pictures, so I’ll try to keep the text minimal here. Check out SugarBelle for the original inspiration, although I didn’t try to make mine look exactly like hers. Where’s the fun in exact replicas? Anyway, pictures:

Breakage happens, shhhh….

Twist and shout! This whole process was so much like playing with Play-Doh. Except this I could steal bites of without grossing myself out. Did you ever eat Play-Doh? Yeah, not recommended…

A little rugged, huh? Oops!

Can you see the crystals? I ran out of flour and “floured” my countertop with sugar for half of them to keep ‘em from sticking.

Oh yeah, I ended up with a bit extra of the red/white, so I did some candy canes and a snail creature. No sense in wasting it!

I didn’t bring popsicle sticks with me, so I ended up using skewers, breaking them in half for some and leaving them whole for others. They would’ve looked better if I had bigger or flat sticks, but it worked.

And for my mini-lollypop swirl, I decided he looked kinda like a cross between a snail and a worm, but either way, he got a face and a toothpick base.

This one may have gotten a little, uh, crispy around the edges.

Am I the only one that looks at the bottom of cookies, too? Probably.

The red/white/blue ones ended up not looking too blue on the outside, but rest assure, the insides were much more equally distributed.

Yeah, probably the only one to snatch a cookie pop from the eater’s hands to go take a picture of the inside, too, huh? At the very least, I could’ve waited until I was eating my own cookie and taken a picture of that one, but nope, had to take theirs, hehe.

All in all, great success. This is the sugar cookie recipe I used, except I cut it down to 16 servings instead of 60, left out the vanilla, and split it into roughly 4 cookies (plus candy canes, and minus the dough I ate).
