Christmas in May? – NYC Bûche de Noël Train

Buche de noel train made up of fancy yule logs for Chrismas from NYC bakeries such as Balthazar, Benoit, Bouchon, Canelle Patisserie, Daniel Boulud (DBGB), Dominique Ansel Bakery, Epicerie Boulud, and Francois Payard Patisserie

(Thank you, Mr. Copy and Paste, for allowing me to correctly put “Bûche de Noël” in the title instead of Buche de Noel.)

I wouldn’t have even known to call it that, to be honest. I recognize the term “yule log,” but when looking at this train, that’s not what I would’ve immediately thought either. Ah well. The point is….

LOOK AT IT!

No, really look. Click through to the link, Serious Eats, and really look at each of the train piece breakdowns. Pretty incredible, right? Each one is from a fancy schmancy bakery in New York City that become highly sought after right around Christmas for their amazing yule logs. After seeing some of the pictures of the insides, I certainly can’t blame them, but I can’t imagine paying some of those prices either.

(With Google Reader going the way of the dinosaurs, I’m forced to find a new feed reader, and so far, I haven’t found one that will allow me to export/import all of my tagged/labeled items. That’s how I’ve saved a lot of my links over the last few years and I don’t want to lose them all. Unfortunately, that also means you’re going to end up with some holiday-specific posts during times of the year where they might seem a little out of place. Oops!)

Eyebombing food – Are inedible eyes okay?

Googly eyes on a sushi roll to look like a snail or caterpillar

Now I’ll be the first to raise my hand if you ask me if it’s okay to play with your food. Of course it is! Change it into silly shapes. Add smiley faces.  Make it look like other objects. Switch the ingredients around into something unexpected. Do whatever you feel like really.

At the same time, I’m a little torn on adding items to food that you can’t actually eat. Yes, it can make it look even more awesome and I’ve definitely done it my fair share of times when when I can’t find something appropriate to use that’s still edible.

It almost feels like cheating at times, though. And it sort of spoils it to have to deconstruct the dish before you can eat it by removing all the parts that are inedible. It’s like having to remove toothpicks from stuffed foods….but even less fun because you immediately kill whatever creation was on the plate and make it less quirky.

Then again, look at this one:

Eyebombing - Adding eyes to an entire breakfast of milk, eggs, pancakes, syrup, butter, salt, and even little eyes on all of the cheerios cereal bowl

Am I really going to complain that I can’t eat the eyes? No way! It’s too cute!

But I’m definitely not going to bother with that bowl of cereal… ;)

P.S. – Candy eyes are sooo much better for this sort of thing, at least when it comes to sweet dishes. You can buy them at the store or make your own like cookplayexplore does.

Rice teddy bear sleeping under an omelet blanket

Sleeping rice teddy bear under an omelet blanket - Prop his head up with a sausage link and add cheese for faces and pillows

Aww! Isn’t he adorable? From what I’ve read, it’s not just a plain omelet and rice teddy bear. He has sausage behind him to prop him up and it looks like there’s cheese for a pillow and facial features in some of the pictures.

I don’t tend to eat rice for breakfast except for the occasional fried rice with eggs inside, so I doubt I’ll be making this any time soon. I’ll leave this one to the other food artists out there, hehe.

(I am not linking to a source for this one because I can’t find it. Most of the top images and whatnot that come up for this are all from sites who have posted about in the months since I first saw and saved this image. Many of them are claiming it as their own, too, which I don’t want to encourage at all. So if you know the owner, as always, please point me in their direction or vice versa.)

~Edit~ Fancy Edibles has a collection of other similar bears, pictures, *and* a video that you guys might enjoy.
