Watermelon Birthday Cake & Party
One of the great things about having so many girls is that it means even more birthdays. More birthdays mean more excuses for parties and cake!
Sometimes that means wondering what the next theme will be, but somehow, a comment is always made or a picture is seen or personality trait is shining….and suddenly, all the pieces start coming together. Before we know it, the cake is planned and an entire party theme has been born.
This party was no different. Instead of being “just a special cake,” it turned into a full fledged “picnic party.” There’s a picnic basket, picket blanket/tablecloth, watermelon trays for chips, sandwiches, bubbles, and watermelon…both of the real and cake varieties.

My mom is going to hate me for posting this picture. And yes, hate is still considered a “bad word” so I’m going to surely get in trouble for that, too, but she’ll agree as soon as she catches wind that I had the nerve to post it:
Totally worth it. The left is cleverly posed so that her face won’t be shown, but the look of sheer shock and disgust as my sister licks the icing ‘mistake’ of her hands is one I can’t possibly censor with black bars. Golden.
If it makes you feel any better, I do often take the time to edit pictures so that nobody is left looking bad. I mean, like this gem:

Anywho, I’m this far into a birthday party post and you haven’t even seen the birthday girl yet! This is N from 2009, pre-party:
Yes, covered in dirt, holding her ears, and waiting patiently for someone to come and retrieve her for cake time. You haven’t forgotten our tradition, right? Note to self…I have a video of this tucked away that I should upload, too.
And in case no one believed me that the cakes and party scene are kept a complete secret, there’s an example of a (very ugly) covered doorway to prevent peeking, too.
Even she doesn’t want to peek, and she’s sitting at the table! The anticipation is a wonderful thing. <3 Oh, and to the far right of that picture is an example of a themed present, too….watermelon scented body wash and shampoo.
^ The “sweet innocent one”….until she gets food. :P

White/red cake for the chocolate haters and chocolate for the rest of us, mmm. Take note of how realistic she made the rind icing, too….it’s squiggly/wavy/textured all the way down like the lines of a real watermelon.
Duck Butt Cake – Quirky bunny parties hard
Let’s flash back to January 18, 2009 when these pictures were taken. I had just finished getting my degree at OSU the previous month and it was time to celebrate.
I’m torn between thinking “Holy cow, that was just 3 years ago” and “Holy cow, it’s already been 3 years? Wtf have I been doing??” Yikes.
The previous summer, I had been visiting home and in one of my particularly quirky moods, I became obsessed with a 3D duck cake pan at a yard sale and convinced my mom to not only buy it, but agree to make a cake for me for a graduation party we weren’t even planning yet, lol. I didn’t let her forget either and she obviously followed through.
Yes, I did say I graduated college…with a real degree…with multiple minor specializations…at the top of my class. And yes, I chose to have a duck cake with lots of little rubber duckies. If that blows your mind, wait until you see me playing with glow sticks and dancing the night away with toddlers. ;)
On an equally as quirky obsession note, I called dibbs on the duck butt. Don’t ask why….I don’t know. I just *had* to have the duck butt. It has a nice ring to it, right? Duck butt, duck butt, duck butt.
*cough*
Anyway…. as with every party or cake post I do, I have tons of pictures, so I put most of them into a collage. Mouse over them and they’ll pop up a slightly larger version or click on through to see the full pictures. Some of them come with stories, though, and they’ll be on down.
Oh, and any of you who attended the party and don’t quite recall some of the details that are now showing in your pictures, it’s because I’ve replaced all your “adult beverages” with baby bottles. PG-13, y’all. ;)
The top middle pictures is how glow stick balls look put together, but for whatever reason, they ended up as hats to spin on our heads, too.
You know it’s a good party when only a few people know the picture is being taken, but everyone in it is smiling.
That second one is my “come hither, you’re dancing with me, too” move.
I really don’t know if I sat down at all that night. I think I might’ve to eat. Maybe. Most of it was spent right out there on the floor with a bunch of kids, though, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I also drove many of them home at the end of the night, too….my home…and we all crashed on couches and floors.
Some of us obviously weren’t done partying, even when bodies said it was time to sleep.
But never fear, the next day brought more duck cake fun. And in case I didn’t say it enough then or you don’t get the impression here, thanks for the fabulous party. <3
Top 30 Video Game Cakes
How anyone could ever choose only 10, I will never know. And I’m sure there are tons I didn’t even come across that deserved a spot here, so send the video game cakes my way and I’ll edit them in…or do a follow-up. There are just too many good ones.

4. Nintendo Controller – I have a special appreciation for cakes that do NOT use fondant. Yes, they’re amazing, but I also think it takes a special knack to work with liquidy icing and craft magnificent cakes freehand like my mom does.
5. Nintendo DS – Icing instead of fondant again. After checking with some other gamers, the conclusion is that the game is Rune Factory….or Legend of Zelda. Anybody who has played either on DS that can confirm?
6. Blue Yoshi – She explains that the picture on the left is what she printed off, but her 8 year old wanted it blue, so she colored in the picture on the right co copy.

10. Angry Birds – I’m sick of Angry Birds stuff, but this one is just awesome. It’s a cake based on a t-shirt based on video game. ;)
11. Playable Angry Birds – And really, sick of Angry Birds or not, there’s no way this could be excluded considering you can actually -play- the game on the cake. Too cool.

Also, I looked for a good Pokemon cake and none of them really blew my mind like I was hoping. A couple of the Snorlax were pretty close from here, but links are broken.
